Our current borehole project has given us so many smiles to the students and teachers of the Ilkisonko Boys Secondary School. Last week, we were updating you on the status of the borehole’s initial dig. We’d like to give you a closer look at part of the process of constructing an operational borehole.

Currently, we’re in the test pumping stage. What happens is that water is pumped for 24 hours to determine the well’s yield (how much water can be accessed at a time). Once the capacity of the well is determined, the team will know the appropriate size pump and generator that are required to run the well. Then the pump house is built, and, in the case of a community borehole, members of the community are trained to maintain and log the use of the water. In this case, it is a school borehole, so it will have a designated staff member assigned to operate it.

All of these steps ensure access to clean water, which improves the lives of everyone in the community. The need to travel long distances for water is erased so that people can focus on building businesses (such as keeping livestock or crafting beads) that support use of the borehole at the Ilkisonko Boys School as well as other life necessities like food, clothing and school fees.

How to Help on #GivingTuesday

On this upcoming #GivingTuesday, we hope to raise enough money to purchase the water pump for the Ilkisonko borehole. Our goal is set for $15,000, and every donation helps us get closer to that target.

Last Giving Tuesday, over $2.7 billion was donated across the world to charitable causes. WILK is excited to join this global community of givers and continue to bring clean water to communities in Kenya.

We’d like to thank all our donors for their continued support over the last 15 years. Our work isn’t done, but with every water project we complete, Maasai gain resources and tools that improve their lives.
